After sunset on operating days, projectors and lasers wash the Statue of Unity in colour while a narrated soundtrack tells Sardar Patel's life and the statue's making, the monument itself as a 182-metre screen. Seating and standing areas face the statue from the show plaza; the spectacle runs roughly half an hour and lands hardest with first-time visitors and children.
The hardware is the reason it works at that scale. The projection mapping is thrown by 51 Christie laser projectors standing roughly 600 metres back, rigged by Christie's Indian partner alongside a German laser-show producer, and the show has run in the evenings since Gujarati new year in 2018, when it was free to watch. Mapping onto a curved bronze figure rather than a flat facade is what makes the statue appear to move.
Entry arrangements have varied between being included with day tickets and separately managed seating, check current rules when booking. No show on Mondays (the campus closes), and weather can cancel. Arrive early on weekends: the good sightlines go 45 minutes before start, and exit traffic afterwards is its own event.
